JAPANESE RYU-O BUGAKU DANCE MASK
Commonly also known
as Ryo-o, with incised signature, depicting a Dragon King of Chinese lore. Popularized in Japan in Bugaku dance
during the Kamakura period for a rain prayers. Greatly detailed wooden mask with lacquer remnants Meiji-jidai or earlier.
Classic bulging eyes, horse hair brows, mustache, beard and dangling "tsuriago" or ring-shaped chin, attached by cords which
accents dance's rhythm. This style Ryu-o mask belongs to the same type of Ryu-o exhibited in the Itsukushima
Shrine in Japan's Hiroshima Prefecture. Measures 11"H X 7"W X 5"D. Good overall condition with old repair to side. Private
