Signed Edo Period Red Ko Kutani Dish

Early feldsparic Kutani features unusual squared-off cartouche with overglaze design of flowering tree tied with paper talismen among flowers and rockery. Soft gilt accents. Underside shows archaic shippo motif surrounding bottom and signature. Measures approx. 4.25" dia. X 1"H.

Polychrome enamel /underglaze food plate with gilt accents featuring beautiful brocade and scenic cartouche of landscape, peony, sparrow, and Ebisu (God of food & prosperity) bringing in yet another fish. Underside with large overglaze leaves. 15"X3", Signed Ku-tani at bottom.

Rare Kinpaku Fugen Bosatsu Processional Mask

Serene gilt visage of bodhisattva Fugen (usually depicted riding an elephant as an attendent of Shaka Nyorai). Worn for traditional Japanese buddhist shrine ceremonial procession. Original armature. Circa 16C. Interior measures approx. 10.5" H X 8"W.

Japanese Edo Ryo-o Bugaku Dance Mask

JAPANESE RYU-O BUGAKU DANCE MASK
 
Commonly also known as Ryo-o, with incised signature, depicting a Dragon King of Chinese lore. Popularized in Japan in Bugaku dance during the Kamakura period for a rain prayers. Greatly detailed wooden mask with lacquer remnants Meiji-jidai or earlier. Classic bulging eyes, horse hair brows, mustache, beard and dangling "tsuriago" or ring-shaped chin, attached by cords which accents dance's rhythm. This style Ryu-o mask belongs to the same type of Ryu-o exhibited in the Itsukushima Shrine in Japan's Hiroshima Prefecture. Measures 11"H X 7"W X 5"D. Good overall condition with old repair to side. Private collection.

Edo Period 風土 Fudo Noh Mask

Expressively carved, 18/19C wood Noh drama mask of Fudo Myo'o, a ferocious Buddhist deity -usually worn to represent a devine guardian, as in the Noh play Chofuku Soga.  With minor paint losses commensurate to age/use. Yamanouchi / Kawasaki Family provenance as per Christie's Sept. 2004

Heavenly Taisho-jidai horned lion-dog ceremonial dance (Shishimai) mask. Important character referred to as Jishi or Oshishi in Japanese. Features beautiful shippaku gold-leaf & lacquer over wood, white hair, movable ears and jaw with greatly executed classic details. Accompanying silk embroidered brocade pillow shows arabesque paulownia, chrysanthemum & clove motifs. Includes original inscribed tomobako/storage box. Fine condition. Measures approx 14".
